2012 Evening

The General Practice Awards 2012 saw hundreds of healthcare professionals and suppliers come together to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of GP teams across the UK.

The grand ballroom at the Hilton, Park Lane, Central London played host to the glittering awards ceremony, where all finalists and their teams were treated to a five-star three-course meal.

The evening’s compere, star of Have I Got News for You and Private Eye columnist, comedian and GP Dr Phil Hammond, entertained the finalists and winners throughout the evening and ensured laughter rang out well into the night.

Dr Hammond’s irreverent humour saw him poking fun at NHS bosses and senior politicians as well as regaling tales of his GP training misdemeanors.

“The NHS training culture has always been see one, do one, teach one,” he said

“Well I have a few apologies to make to some wonderful nurses who had my back in those training years.”

Dr Hammond was also unafraid to broach some of the more serious and pressing areas of concern in the NHS, namely that of whistleblowing. He was keen to encourage GP teams to learn from the events of Mid-Staffordshire, Winterbourne View and the Jimmy Saville scandal, and implored them to have the courage to whistleblow on poor patient care or patient safety issues.

The keynote speech was delivered by Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham, who praised general practice staff around the country for continuing to deliver high quality patient care amidst a sea of change in the NHS, thanked GP teams for helping to “turn around” the NHS during his time as Secretary of State and asked for help in coming up with the “big alternative” to the current reform plans.

Huge congratulations to all the finalists in each category; nominated from a shortlist of hundreds of applications. The scale and scope of projects aimed at improving patient care was both impressive and humbling.
